About Us

Sunshine Bakery, which opened in 2005, is a family-owned and operated bakery, located in the heart of the Natal Midlands in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

We are passionate about our bread and are committed to offering consumers healthy, fresh, tasty, bread, with a good shelf-life. Our bread is unique as it is the only bread on the market which is enriched with Vitamin D. Our secret lies in our unique premix recipe that has taken generations to perfect!

The foundation of Sunshine Bakery’s success is the unrivalled personal service we offer to our customers, with no outlet being too small or too big to become a stockist of Sunshine Bakery bread. Our Family

Daniel Anastasis, the Founder Baker of Sunshine Bakery was born in the tiny village of Farmakas, in Cyprus. As a child he was always interested in food and got involved in making bread in a clay oven just outside his stone house! When he came to South Africa in 1968 Daniel first opened a tea-room in Pietermaritzburg and later bought a floundering bakery in Richmond, which he turned into a successful business.

Albany Bakeries approached Daniel to run their Pietermaritzburg plant, which he did for 12 years. During this time Daniel and his wife, Theoni, opened Upper Crust Bakery, which is still running today. In 2005 Daniel and his son, Taki, opened Sunshine Bakery.

Daniel has since retired to Cyprus, but, always an entrepreneur, he and Theoni now have a water plant in the village of his birth, producing Farmakas water, which is sold all over Cyprus.

Daniel was also listed in the Guinness Book of Records for creating the world’s longest kebab!!

Daniel’s son, Taki, oversees the business today and is proud of the growth it has achieved; growing from a staff of just x people in 2005 to having a staff of over 300 people today, many of whom have been with us from the beginning. Many members of staff have years of experience in the bakery business, bringing both technical expertise and a focus on quality to Sunshine Bakery.

Our home

Sunshine Bakery is located in the heart of Pietermartizburg , with state-of-the-art bakery equipment manned by a highly trained team. Sunshine Bakery keeps abreast of technological advances in the baking industry and employs modern baking processes, backed by unrivalled bakery and technical support.

In-process quality checks and stringent adherence to our food safety policies through strict manufacturing processes ensure that our bread is produced to the highest standards recognised in South Africa. Sunshine Bakery bread is subjected to strict quality control systems and is not allowed to leave our bakery until it has been approved by our Quality Control Department.

Sunshine Bakery is HACCP certified, an internationally recognised food safety certification, where strict criteria have to be met. Sunshine Bakery bread is also Halaal and has been certified by SANHA.
